Pen Names?
Should I choose a pen name?
“Ciara,” you are thinking to yourself, “we are all tired of hearing about your name. We know how to pronounce it already, give it a rest!” But yesterday I saw a post on Redlines and Deadlines, the Ellora’s Cave Editors blog, that made me nervous:
Make absolutely sure that readers will be able to remember, pronounce, and spell your name! Repeat after me: remember, pronounce, spell. That sounds simple, but a lot of writers screw it up by picking elaborate or oddly spelled or supposedly “meaningful” pen names, in an effort to be unique. Well, that name is not meaningful to readers if they can’t find your website or look you up on Amazon because they don’t remember your name or aren’t spelling it right. And they won’t discuss you or recommend you to others if they are afraid of embarassing themselves by mispronouncing your name.
Most authors chose pen names for privacy issues. Privacy? What’s that? Ciara Stewart is my real name. Mr. Wonderful, being a professional blogger, Adobe evangelist, and all around tech geek, has already committed every small detail of his life (and therefore most of mine) to the internet. Between twitter, flickr, facebook, myspace, brightkite, spot, and goodness knows what else, we iz famiz on the internetz. Mr. Wonderful says, “Well, they know our apartment, but they don’t know our apartment number!” Uh huh. That’s reassuring. But I digress.
My concern is “remember, pronounce, and spell” my name. Even Keira Knightly changed her name for us silly Americans (it is really Kiera). I can’t depend on Jeri Smith-Ready educating the entire romance and fantasy reading populace on the correct pronunciation of Ciara. lol. (Though I appreciate her efforts!)
I don’t believe in having multiple pen names. If I like an author I want it to be EASY to locate other books written by that author. Perhaps if an author writes in multiple genres, like erotica and YA, but not across subgenres. I don’t understand why Jayne Ann Krantz has so MANY different names. Sure branding is important, but so is making sure your fans can find you!
So the question I pose to you is this: Should I Anglicize Ciara? I could be Keira or Kira. Maybe Kira MacKiernan. :) Riiight.
We could try the porn star naming game: Your first pet and the first street you lived on. I’d be Shadow Burke.
What would you choose for your pen name (or porn name)? Have you heard any that were outright ridiculous?

I was just asked this by somebody. I like your name, and even though I know how to pronounce it correctly, when I see it in print, I still want to say See-R-ah. But I don’t know. It doesn’t look unpronouncable. I think if it was Crtwa, that would be more a problem.

Oh, porn star: Muffin 22nd. It works!
Actually that would be a cool pen name.

I like your real name, too. It has a very nice appeal to it and don’t think you need to change it up to make it stand out more or anything. But I also bet 99% of people will pronounce it Sierra like the mountain range. I did until I read the correct pronunciation in your ‘About Me’ section here on your blog.

If I had a porn ame it would be Scruffy Overlook.

I’d always heard the porn name was your middle name and the street you grew up on – in which case I’d be Ann West – but in your rules, I’d be Pamela West (I had a goldfish named Pamela – my creative talents were focused elsewhere when I was five.) The first sounds a bit like a 50s B-movie starlet; the second is just…nondescript (no offense to any real Pamela Wests out there.)
I think Ciara Stewart is a fine name, just depends on how much you can tolerate being called Sierra. If I ever published I’ve long accepted that I’d publish under a pen name since my surname is German, unpronouceable, and unspellable. Ciara Stewart has a really nice sound. But Keira Stewart would probably be more recognizable, thanks to Ms Knightley.

Huh. Well, honestly? I keep a list of books I’m going to buy and I write down both first and last names. But I’m anal retentive that way. Your name spelling is unique. But I will admit, that like CJ, I pronounced it “SIERRA” until I read your blog and got the correction. Sooo, I dunno. I like your name, but I do get your consternation.
Oh, my porn name? Sunday Saratoga. How’s that for SEXAY?

The middle name/street-you-live-on is your soap opera name. (Elizabeth Blackhawk)
My porn name? It is either Cisco Shangrila or Cupcake Shangrila heehee!
I figured if/when I buckle down and start writing I will use my mom’s maiden name. Shannon McGinley.
I like your name. I would go with it. You could tweak the spelling of your first name, but def keep it. It is a good balance of unique and recognizable.

Cookie Yecker would be the poor name and somehow that doesn’t surprise me.
I am going with Sarai as my psy. name b/c my daddy called me his little Sarai (e) so in honor of him if I ever get published it will be Sarai Brown. Which FYI is not my real name Sara Brown is See only one letter! Wow I hope I don’t have any stalkers out there…

and since i wasted the whole post above me talking about me how bout i answer your question. I agree with people mis pernouncing it and if your like me who can’t stand people misspelling it that would get old. I would switch up the spelling so people recoginze it and refer to you correctly

Thanks everyone. I suppose Sierra Stewart has a nice alliteration thing going on.
Sunday Saratoga is my favorite. Maybe I’ll name a character that. ;)

My name would be Tosca Cardenden. Hmm. I think I may have to stick to plain ole Pamela. (Which is my real name.)
