If you like the Black Dagger Brotherhood…
Join with me now: “Hello my name is [name], and I’m addicted to J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood.”
Welcome!
While you wait for Lover Enshrined to come out, here are 13 other book recommendations for Black Dagger Brotherhood crack addicts.
There is a difference between Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy: Paranormal Romance must have a main love story with a satisfying Happily-Ever-After for the hero and heroine. Urban Fantasy does not. BDB falls in the former, so I have NOT included Urban Fantasy in this list (even thought Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series is teh awesome). The recommendations all contain the things we love about BDB: Alpha heroes, love-true-love, and fabulous world building.
Rec’s for BDB Addicts:
- Guardian series by Meljean Brook
- Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole
- Midnight Desire by Emma Holly
- On the Prowl anthology by Patricia Briggs, Eileen Wilks, and Karen Chance
- Hot Spell anthology by Emma Holly, Shiloh Walker, and Meljean Brook
- Dirk & Steele series by Marjorie M. Liu
- Tairen Soul series by C.L. Wilson
- Darkness Chosen series by Christina Dodd
- Midnight Breeds series by Lara Adrian
- Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon
- Paladins of Darkness series by Alexis Morgan
- Nightwalker series by Jacqueline Franks
- Psy-Changelings series by Nalini Singh (which I haven’t read but have heard great things)
Do you have any other recommendations?

*hand up* I have a good series rec – The Sons of Destiny series by Jean Johnson. Mind you they aren’t that dark – but I think they fit your other requirements.

Wha????
How is it possible that I haven’t pimped the heck out of Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series to you?? You really must (I’m afraid I’ll have to insist) get on that. I defy you not to fall in love with Lucas Hunter from Slave to Sensation??
I’ll also give a very strong recommendation to Lara Adrian. Yes, I hear over and over again that her books are too similar to Ward’s. Here’s my thing, Adrian has a mythology that she *sticks* to. It’s refreshing.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the crack, and I read the crack, and I’ve already been to a couple of bookstores hoping the crack was shelved early. But Ward doesn’t always do a good job of sticking to her mythology. Adrian does. Plus, her heroes are yummy!

I’d ditto the Lara Adrian recommendation. Misses the level and mark of the oh so sweet high of the BDB, but a great filler nontheless! By the 2nd book I was down and and in love with her heros, especially Rio. He haunts my thoughts almost as much as Wrath and Zadist…..Ummm, does it sound like I need rehab?

Oooh. Good rec’s. I have to say, though. On the Prowl is not so great as a whole. Absolutely read the Patricia Briggs story, but the rest… they did nothing for me. The last story was a DNF.

MaryKate – I put both on the list didn’t I? I know I need to read NS books after the DIK party. They are in my TBR pile.
Shannon – On the Prowl is how I discovered Patricia Briggs, so I owe it a debt of enormous gratitude. I also enjoyed Eileen Wilks and Karen Chance’s short stories. Both of those stories might have been more cohesive as full-length novels, but they successfully demonstrated the authors talent enough to make me want to read more. And that is the purpose of an anthology in my humble opinion. I pick up one because I know the name of one of the authors, Meljean Brook in Hot Spell for example, and I end up discovering more similar authors who I enjoy, like Emma Holly. I can forgive the included stories that don’t work for me because I only picked up the book to begin with for that one novella by that one author. If others are good, it’s an extra bonus. (I did not read past the first two pages in Sunny’s story. It did NOT work for me. Which is why I didn’t include her name on the list above.)

Just wanted to say hello and I’ve read all the Dark Hunter Series as well as The Black Dagger Brotherhood. All of them rock. I love BDB by far though. All of the characters are fun and have great attitude. Keep em coming J.R. Ward.
June 5, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Lynn Veihl is almost as good as BDB… i have enjoyed the series of the Darkyn can’t wait for the new one to come out..

YOU HAVE TO READ “PLEASURE UNBOUND” by Larissa Ione if you like the BDB. It is fabulous!
July 15, 2008 at 12:14 pm
BDB are the best. I can`t wait till october. I definetly need rehab, for beeing in love with the boys of J.R.Ward. The breed warriors of Lara Adrian are loveable too. I hope there will be many many more books of both writers.
July 17, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Thanks for recommending the larissa Ione book. As allways I hooked up with the bad boy ,wraith this time (wrath? wraith? drake? dragos? what? only a coincidence that those names are used so often?) It realy was fun to read, but again there is the long wait for the next one. Or should I try Lynne Veihl????
July 22, 2008 at 8:05 am
I have read the Lynne Veihl book series and it is pretty good. It kept me turning pages and looking forward to the next book. She really only brings her first two characters (Alexandra and Michael) through the series with some mention of the other characters you meet as you read through. What I LOVE about JR Ward is that you get updates on ALL of the brothers in EVERY book. I am DEFINITELY looking forward to the next book where JL Ward will feature Rhevenge!!
July 29, 2008 at 10:34 pm
I’m on the second book of Lynn Viehls and I just can’t really get into them. So far I like Jacquelyn Franks Nightwalkers pretty well even if they are demons rather than vamps. I will certainly try all the ones that have been suggested here. I read waaay too much, lol.

Love the BDB – my favorite is Zsadist. I love a good rescue! But I can’t believe that the Dark Series by Christine Feehan is not on your list! 18 books so far, but book 2 is my absolute favorite: Dark Desire. They are fabulous!
August 17, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Hi All I am trying your recommendations as quickly as possible, so please keep them coming. Anyone try Christine Feehan? I heard her Dark series is great.
June 17, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Her Dark Series is fabulous. I haven’t tried the other though…But definitely read the Dark series.
September 12, 2008 at 8:44 am

Thanks for this list. I’m a new reader of the BDB books, and I’m officially hooked. I’m glad there are other books out there for me to try while I wait for new installments.
October 6, 2008 at 10:53 am
I have also just discovered another series for BBD lovers:
Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld
October 15, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Lords of the underworld is brilliant and the sherrilyn kenyon series is a must and it’ll give you plenty to read since there’s 13 books now and she’s just started a dream hunter series as well. I cannot wait for the next book in the brotherhood series it needs to be published like now!
October 15, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Oh and guys check out kresley coles immortal after dark series she’s created a whole world of vampires demons and werewolves and other creatures but she’s really pulled it off it’s a really good series
January 4, 2009 at 10:28 pm
To get over the Sookie Stackhouse Series I started reading The Black Dagger Brotherhood series I can’t sleep without wishing to meet a man like the ones in the books I have been reading. I feel like I need Rehab in the worse way. they are so good I laughed I got Hot and I cried they are so good
January 10, 2009 at 3:34 am
Thanks for the ideas – I have read and loved them all (except Patricia Briggs, can’t get into the series at all). Anyone looking for more suggestions? Try Robin T Popp’s Night Slayer Series and Angela Knight’s Mageverse and Time Hunters books. Hope you enjoy them:-)
January 19, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Oh my gosh! I loved the Sookie Stackhouse series and was so upset when I read the last book of the series (until the next one is available.) Then I found Anita Blake Vampire Hunter and fell in love all over again. I’ve gotten through her series too. Now what am I going to do? I was turned on to BDB and have lost my mind. These guys are just out of this world. I’m just like Suze, I think about them all the time. I’m currently on book 3. Also picked up J. Frank series, Laurell K Hamilton’s Merry Gentry series, Gena Showalters Lords of the Underworld. I just can’t get enough. Another great series I just completed is Keri Arthur’s Riley Jenson series. I’m so glad I came across this site. Thanks for the addition recommendations for great reads. I always worry that I’m going to run out.
January 23, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Hi there-thank you so much for the list! I hadn’t found some of these yet. BBD is a great series and finding books while waiting for more can be challenging! I have found a few good series to recomend
Christine Feehan-Her Carpathian series is amazing and her Ghostwalker series. Sherilyn Kenyon, Gena Showalter and Kresley Cole are the other authors I make sure that I catch the new books when they come out!
February 5, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Hi, thanks for the list – your a lifesaver really!
I just read all the BDB books in a week and have now gone into SERIOUS withdrawal. Hopefully this list of books will keep me sane until Revhenge’s story is released in April.
I’d like to also recommend Alyssa Day’s Warriors of Posseidon series – alpha males with attitude and lots of love!!
Thanks again
February 16, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Thanks for the suggestions. I read the BDB books after reading the Twilight series. I am in love with the brothers and can’t wait for Revhenge’s story. I have never been a big reader but I couldn’t put these books down. Love them

March 16, 2009 at 6:08 am
I LOVE THE BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD!!!!!! The second series that I read was Lara Adrian’s books. They were a second to JR Ward. The BDB books will always be my favorite and I will always compare the next read to them. I cannot wait for April for the 7th book. Thanks for all of the recommendations.
March 21, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Well, although I’m not sure if the Witch of Cologne counts, I still think it’s a good story.
Also, if there are any BDB fans out there who like to roleplay, check this site out:

The beauty of the BDB is the strength of its characters and yet there is such subtlety in the writing, for such high intensity, sexual content it has a beauty to it, not an exploitive feel. I am passionately in love with LKH’s Anitaverse but there’s something extremely addictive with the BDB, the males are soooo masculine, hot and incredible. Oh mein gott to be sexual with them….give me an ice bath, phew! I’ve never been so wanting of these guys (esp V/B), well except JC in LKH’s books. Ciara and other gals thanks for the recommendations. Hugs, Lise x

I am completely obsessed with the black dagger series. I was looking for something more adult after reading the twilight series (which i am very obsessed with too) and came across BDB. I tried to get into Christine Feehan (dark series)…I just couldn’t she was so repetitive and made me not care what so ever for the characters. I really tried to get into them but grew so bored of how much their romance was just boring. I also tried the Demonica series and found that one just as boring and i was not attracted to any of the characters nor cared for the story. I hope these recommendations are as great of a romance, lust, passion and of course a tease as the twilight and black dagger series.
P.S. I have to say zsadist has become my fave. I love all the brothers but crave a challenge and dark man ; )
March 29, 2009 at 8:25 pm
real bodice rippers and so hot…Karen chance’s Cassandera palmer series…….touch the dark, Claimed by shadow and embrace the night pluse a new one out in April I am not sure if its happily ever after yet cuz the story continues. First book was a litle hard to get started and alittle confusing then I got hooked. If you like BDB you will like these for sure
March 31, 2009 at 12:54 pm
All of these authors books are “drool worthy”! It is hard to pick a fave – BDB, Carpathians or Dark Hunter? Hmmm! Another author to try is Lora Leigh’s Breed Series – Not to be confused with Lara Adrian’s Breeds!
June 17, 2009 at 8:34 pm
How about one of each?
April 5, 2009 at 9:57 am
Hi Everyone! I am excited to look into everyone’s recommendations. After reading the Twilight Saga I went through series after series quite quickly. I was so excited to find the BDB series and brake out of the young adult vampire genre that Twilight pulls you into. I have to say that Zsadist’s book was my fav thus far as well. Ward has done an amazing job developing the characters and drawing us all in. I cant wait until April 28th. Thanks for all the insight!
April 15, 2009 at 10:31 am
HAS ANYONE READ SHILOH WALKER AND MELJEAN BROOKS’ BOOKS? ARE THE SERIES ANY GOOD?
April 17, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Another good series is the allysa day’s series ( poseidon warriors)… they are good.
Speaking of Larissa Ione.. I loved it ,I hope she continues with her series…
May 15, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Hi all!
The BDB is an awesome series! I’ve read all the books and have fallen in love with all of the characters. Although, I truly want to know what’s going to happen with Xhex and John Matthew!
I’m excited to see that there are other series on here that are similar to the BDB. Thank you everyone for you suggestions!
These are not similar to the BDB but more to Twilight….
P.C.Cast & Kristen Cast
Night World series – 1, 2, and 3
Alyson Noel – Immortal series
Christine Warren – “One bite with a stranger” – a lil risque…
May 19, 2009 at 10:22 am
Loved all the BDB except Rev. It just wasn’t as good for me. Can’t wait to hear more abut Thor and John
July 7, 2009 at 2:57 pm
OMG… BDB boyz rock my world!!Yes hello my name is Vannessa and im a BDB addict. The raw sexiness of these books keep me wanting, craving, neeeeeding!! I love V’s talents and Rhage’s arrogance in and out of the bedroom.. I searched the bookshelves aimlessly worried I wont have anything to read in the long await for Rhevenge. Thank you for all your suggestions, you dont know how much I appreciate it.
July 15, 2009 at 11:51 am
Hey You guys . Ive read every book by JR Ward and i absolutely love them. She is an incredible writer and im just addicted to Zsadist. Another writer that is not well known but really good is jeaniene frost. Her Night huntress series is to die for. You will fall in love with bones. Try it.
