Picture Book Art Project

Now for the hard part

My friend Emily has been in labor for 24 hours, so I thought it might be a good time to finish the super-cool baby present I’m making for her. Ha. I love picture books and love to share my love of reading. Alors, I give books as baby presents. My friend Rebekah named her baby Olivia and I sent her the entire collection of Olivia books by Ian Falconer. What do you give as baby presents? I always plan to knit something, like baby booties, but to this day I’ve only finished two knitting projects. (I’ve started many more.) So many plans, so little time.

My brilliant present idea:

  1. Cut the letters B-L-A-K-E out of wood using Grandma’s jigsaw that I’ve never used before. How hard can it be?
  2. Sand letters and paint them white.
  3. Pick out 5 pretty and relatively-easy-to-duplicate children’s books. (This took me a while as I had to decide whether to get board books or not. Not all my favorite books come in board books, but board books are easiest for a baby to play with.)
  4. Paint a picture from each book onto a letter.
  5. Cut out and glue felt onto the back of each letter.
  6. Wrap.

Why do I need extra time for this? Pshaw. I am superwoman.

The books I finally chose after much debate:

  1. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
  2. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (board book) by Beatrix Potter
  3. Snuggle Puppy! A Love Song (board book) by Sandra Boynton
  4. The Paper Bag Princess written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko
  5. Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney

The first two are classics, the third is adorable and the last two are my all-time favorite picture books. I will post more photos after the white paint dries and I start the difficult project of illustrating. What are your favorite picture books?

Nice choices, I actually always figured Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney was a classic. This is great now that I’m getting so many little nieces and nephews and the occasional friend who makes me an unoffical uncle. Having a good present I can give to people who have babies is always nice. Especially picture book related stuff, cause I too love them.
